Seoul to invest KRW 346bn in post-Covid digital transformation

Seoul Metroplitan Government said it will set aside KRW 112.6bn for 253 projects in the smart city space and will help to grow small- and medium-sized ICT companies by placing orders and helping to create jobs.
Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has announced plans to establish infrastructure for new administrative digital services based on metaverse, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Specifically, it will set aside KRW 112.6bn of investment for 253 projects in the smart city sector. In total this year, the city aims to invest KRW 345.9bn in 1,067 information-related projects which is expected to create 3,494 jobs.
Inclusive education
Additionally, smart CCTVs will reinforce the network for citizens’ safety, and inclusive education will be expanded for the digitally excluded.
This project is expected to reinvigorate the youth job market, which SMG reports has long been depressed, and lead the growth of small and medium-sized ICT companies. Seoul’s goal is for 577 orders (54 per cent) to be placed in the first half of this year to revitalise the economy.
At the heart of Seoul’s digital transformation efforts are:
new citizen services by utilising metaverse and virtual reality
digital administrative services based on big data and AI
wider deployment of smart CCTV
an emphasis on education for the digitally excluded, including senior citizens and the disabled.
As previously reported on SmartCitiesWorld, the project will see SMG invest KRW 7bn in applying metaverse technologies and establish Metaverse Seoul as a means of diversifying remote communication channels.

Metaverse Seoul will create a metaverse ecosystem for all administrative services, including economy, education, culture, tourism, and others. In museums and major landmarks of the city, content using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will be provided so that citizens and tourists can immersively explore the sites they are visiting.
New technologies, including big data, AI, IoT, and blockchain, will be applied and combined with the city’s overall administration to provide better digital services. The estimated cost for related projects will be around KRW 67.7bn.
